Experiential Learning

You learn by doing, and that's what we're all about. We focus on experiential learning so you get hands-on experience which is effective in absorbing new and important information. We want to prepare you for success by giving you real-world situations to problem solve, make decisions, collaborate and plan.  Employers love when you have this experience and have been exposed to industry to enhance your essential skills.

We want to make sure you'll be job ready when you graduate and our programs have so many experiential learning opportunities to support this! Our programs offer a mix of simulation training,  capstone projects, work placements, clinical placements, co-op,  field camps, student jobs,  apprenticeships, artistic showcases, job shadowing, outdoor learning, virtual reality, and projects and partnerships with organizations.

Aviation Simulators
Our Aviation Technology - Flight program has flight-training simulators on campus and at our Hangar. They're great for pre-flight preparation, post-flight review or catching up on lesson plans. They support single engine or multi-engine training and match our flight-training aircraft. And this is just on top of the hundreds of hours of in-flight training time our Aviation students get in our College-owned Zlin and Piper Semionle aircraft.

Virtual Reality
Experience this cool learning opportunity to expand on learning more about the human anatomy with virtual reality. Students in our Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program support their learning with VR, field placements and working in our on-campus Physiotherapy Clinic.

Interactive Labs
Many of our Engineering programs, including Bachelor of Engineering - Mechatronics, Robotics and Automation and many more provide hours of hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art engineering and robotics labs.

MILO Training Simulation
Students in our Police Foundations, Protection, Security and Investigation, and Natural Resource/Environmental Law - Inspection and Enforcement programs get exposed to many real-life scenarios and training opportunities in our simulation lab including use-of-force and firearms training.

Nursing Simulators
Students in many of our Health programs including Bachelor of Science - Nursing, Practical Nursing, Personal Support Worker and Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant programs get hands-on experience with real-world situations in our simulation labs, including the Adult Medical-Surgical Simulation Lab.

Digital Film Studio
Students in our Digital Film Production program gain the skills needed for their future in film by working in our live sets for class projects and personal projects. On top of their time on campus sets, they get some really neat opportunities to work as crew members on films shot locally.

Hairstyling Salon
Students in our Hairstyling program learn hairstyling, barbering and colouring techniques, extensions, wigs and more in our on-campus salon. They work with instructors who are licensed hairstylists, participate in workshops with professionals and enhance their skills while providing hair services to clients attending the Salon.

The Spa
Our campus Spa is where out Esthetician students learn from skilled instructors to provide services like manicures, lash extensions, massage, microblading, brow shaping and so much more. They learn through providing services to staff and students and show off their skills to clients accessing services in the Spa.

Business Simulation
In the last semester of our Business program, students work in teams to develop a winning business strategy in a business simulation competition. They compete against hundreds of other teams around the world, making decisions for their companies. Teams lock in their information weekly to be ranked when the simulation measures stock price, earnings per share, image rating, return on equity, and credit rating.

Co-op
Our Culinary Management program, Civil Engineering Technician program, and many of our School of Natural Environment diploma programs offer a semester-long cooperative education opportunity working with local businesses allowing students to gain real-world experience and build essential skills. Our School of Natural Environment diploma programs offer amazing learning experiences in the best outdoor spaces you'll find. Go on multi-day field camps and be exposed to skills related to your program and overall outdoor and natural environment activities. Learn a mix of tree identification, compassing, boat operation, wildlife identification, and so much more.
Organizations can work with our Applied Learning and Research department to help them with a business solution - and your program may be tasked with supporting one of these businesses. Your team will research the problem to determine and design a solution that you can present to the business which can be implemented in the real world to improve operations.

Capstone Projects
Many of our programs, including our IT programs and Graphic Design - Digital Media, have a course dedicated to a capstone project where students work on real-world projects or solutions to help students gain the skills needed to succeed in their career. They may work on projects related to real industry problems with support from industry-professional instructors, along with collaboration with organizations and our Applied Research Office.

Field Placements
Students work in local organizations gaining industry and career essential skills with field placement opportunities. Our Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Service Worker and Social Service Worker - Indigenous Specialization programs each have at least one placement opportunity where students work with an organization for the semester to gain hands-on experience and prepare for real-world success.

Students in our Skilled Trades programs will get ongoing experience performing trade-related work with state-of-the-art equipment found in many workplaces. Motive Power Centre
Get hands-on with cars, trucks and heavy equipment in our amazing Motive Power Centre, including our Heavy Equipment Lab. You'll gain valuable real-world experience building, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles, heavy equipment and their parts. Your industry-experienced instructors will help you develop the skills and knowledge to be in-demand.
